Citra Solv’s Fall Cleaning Checklist

As summer draws to its end, thoughts turn to back-to-school, back to work, changing your closets, and other seasonal demands. But your home needs to adjust to the change of seasons, too! A few rags, a bit of time, and some efficient cleaning products will help you enjoy a natural, fresh, clean autumn. Here’s a checklist to help you get a fresh start on a new season; for a printable list, check here.

Throughout the Home:

Curtains and sheers – wash
Light fixtures and ceiling fans – clean and dust
Doors: knobs, handles, hinges and jambs – wipe down.
Add oil to door hinges
Window blinds and shades – dust and/or wash
Hard to reach areas (tops of doors, tops of cabinets, above refrigerator, etc. – dust
Carpets and rugs – shampoo (See our Carpets, Floors, and More Video)
Windows and screens – wash (don’t forget the windowsills!) (Window & Glass video)
Mirrors – clean (See Window & Glass Video)
Clutter – organize, prioritize, donate, and/or discard
Trash bins – clear & clean (See Surfaces on our Cleaning Tips page)

Kitchen:

Oven – clean inside and out
Refrigerator – clean inside and out
Vacuum coils
Stove – wash exhaust fan filters (dishwasher or by hand)
Garbage Disposal Maintenance (See Drain Maintenance Cleaning Tips)

Bathrooms & Bedrooms:

Shower curtain – wash (or replace)
Bedding – clean blankets, sheets and pillows (don’t forget the mattress covers and dust ruffles)
Flip mattresses
Go through Winter Coats & Blankets to look for donations to local shelters, etc.

Laundry Room:

Dryer vent – clean out thoroughly to remove lint from hose

Other:

Pet beds – wash (or replace)
Fireplaces – clean and ensure safety (Chimney Sweep)

Have oil or gas burner professionally checked and clean
Attic & Basement - wash floors and vacuum up cobwebs
Garage – wash floors, vacuum up cobwebs and clean garbage cans and recycling bins (see the Garage & Beyond section of the “Cleaning Tips” page on our website)

Outdoors:

Outdoor Grill – Clean thoroughly before storing (see video)
Exterior Areas – Wash down driveway, patio and deck
Outdoor Furniture – Clean before storing
Garden Hoses – Drain well before storing
Flower Pots – Add soil to compost and then rinse containers before storing
Gutters – Clean out leaves and debris
House Exterior – Pressure wash (touch up exposed areas with paint where necessary to prevent damage to the wood)
Windows & Doors – Weather-strip to seal any air leaks
Install storm windows
Cars – Clean inside and out. Extract carpets and change to winter mats (see video)
